As you know, we are publishing weekly content on our newsletter: The Open Tome. One of our discord members (where you can also join to get in contact with us!) Kevv asked if there are conch shell horns that Sahuagin use as magical instruments and bardic instruments.
We thought about adding it to the already existing content and updating the files, but it would take only a few pages at most and would be more work than it was worth to update, announce and expect people to update their already downloaded files. So we decided to give it openly here, in our blog.
Here the BRUTAL INSTRUMENTS are! Magical instruments will be covered in the following blog in a few days.
Hide Drum
A large drum made of stretched animal hide over a wooden or bone frame. It produces deep, resonant beats, often used to signal gatherings or accompany rituals.
Clattersticks
Two simple wooden sticks carved with primitive markings. Striking them together creates a sharp, rhythmic clatter, perfect for keeping time or creating simple melodies.
Junk Harp
A small harp crafted from scraps of wire and metal. Its uneven construction produces dissonant, jangling notes that feel raw and chaotic.
Marching Snare
A compact drum with a durable hide stretched tightly over its frame. Its crisp, clear beats are ideal for maintaining rhythm and morale during long marches.
Fang Whistle
A whistle carved from an animal fang, designed to emit sharp, piercing tones. It’s lightweight and easy to carry, making it perfect for signaling over long distances.
Reed Flute
A flute fashioned from hollow reeds, its smooth, airy tones evoke the natural sounds of birds and wind. It’s simple to play and highly portable.
Rock Clapper
Two polished stones tied together with sinew. When struck, they produce a clean, clicking rhythm that carries well in enclosed spaces.
Labyrinth Horn
A spiraling horn made from a beast’s horn or sturdy wood. It produces a low, mournful tone that can travel great distances, making it useful for both communication and performance.
War Caller
A large wooden tube with a single slit, reinforced with hide and bone. Blowing into it creates a deep, rumbling sound that stirs excitement or signals danger.
Coral Rattle
A rattle made from a hollow coral shell filled with pebbles or bone fragments. Shaking it creates a soft, rhythmic swishing sound reminiscent of waves.
Sea Lute
A stringed instrument carved from driftwood, its strings made from dried plant fibers. It produces gentle, soothing melodies that mirror the ebb and flow of water.
Wave Drum
A drum crafted with a sharkskin head stretched over a coral frame. Its deep, rolling beats are reminiscent of crashing waves, often used in ceremonial settings.
Conch Shell Horn
A horn crafted from a large conch shell, its tip carefully hollowed to form a mouthpiece. When blown, it produces a haunting, resonant wail that echoes across great distances, evoking the call of the sea. Often used to rally allies or signal danger in coastal or maritime environments.
